സാഹോദര്യത്തിന്റെയും സമാധാനത്തിന്റെയും സന്ദേശവുമായി കാവിയുടുത്ത ഒരു യുവസന്യാസി വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മുമ്പ് കടലുകള്‍ താണ്ടി പാശ്ചാത്യരാജ്യങ്ങളില്‍ പര്യടനം നടത്തി ലോകശ്രദ്ധ പിടിച്ചുപറ്റി. ആ യുവസന്യാസി, സ്വാമി വിവേകാനന്ദന്റെ ജന്മദിനം ആയ ഇന്ന് (ജനു: ൧൨) ദേശീയ യുവദിനം ആയി അഘോഷിക്കുന്നു.
